Program Description
Event Details
The winter solstice, also called the hibernal solstice, occurs when either of Earth's poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun. In the Northern Hemisphere, this falls on December 21. This date is also known as the longest night of the year, or the darkest.
Every year, Hillsborough hosts a lantern walk on this night on the Riverwalk. It is a beautiful celebration where participants carry handmade lanterns to light up the night as they walk along the Riverwalk.
Illuminate the darkest days of the year with our Winter Solstice Lanterns Workshop! Teens, join us at the library to create your own stunning lanterns in celebration of the Winter Solstice. This hands-on craft session is a perfect way to embrace the season and bring a bit of light and cheer to the long winter nights. Use this lantern for your own use or use it to join in the Hillsborough Solstice walk on the 21st.
Registration is encouraged, but not required.

Information About Age Ranges
While the library's family programs are open to all ages, other programs in youth services are designed for a specific age or grade range. Establishing age and grade ranges allows us to plan programs that are appropriate for each range of child development, maintain quality in our programming, and promote fairness to all. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Beth Hawkey, youth services supervisor.
